A Kongacph Kitchen Where Two Architects Live

A Top-Floor Apartment in Central Copenhagen

Located in the central part of Copenhagen, this top-floor apartment was carefully reconstructed by two architects who wanted to preserve the original atmosphere of the space while adapting it for modern living. The project became a study in balance between historical character and contemporary craftsmanship.

From the very beginning, the intention behind this Kongacph kitchen project was not to dominate the apartment, but to become a natural continuation of its architecture.

Preserving the Original Character

One of the defining qualities of the apartment was its original wooden structure. Large aged beams stretch throughout the ceiling, creating rhythm, warmth, and a strong architectural identity. During the reconstruction, both the original beams and wooden floors were carefully preserved and reconstructed rather than replaced.

The aged timber became the emotional centre of the home. Instead of covering imperfections, the architects chose to celebrate them — allowing textures, marks, and natural irregularities to remain visible throughout the interior. This respect for original materials strongly influenced the layout of the Kongacph kitchen.

The 25×25 Workshop Kitchen by Kongacph

At the centre of the apartment stands the bespoke Kongacph kitchen island, designed using the signature 25×25 construction principle. The island was created as a freestanding architectural element that could visually stand out while still maintaining a quiet relationship with the historic beams surrounding it.

The proportions of the open oak framework reference traditional carpentry details found throughout the apartment. Rather than competing with the heavy wooden ceiling structure, the 25×25 design kitchen island introduces lightness and transparency into the space.

Open shelving allows everyday objects, ceramics, and kitchen tools to become part of the atmosphere of the home. This approach creates a softer and more lived-in feeling compared to fully enclosed kitchen volumes.

A Dialogue Between Old and New

The central design challenge was creating harmony between the restored historical elements and the contemporary Kongacph kitchen. The kitchen island needed enough presence to define the room while remaining respectful toward the apartment’s original structure.

Natural oak surfaces, light flooring, brushed steel details, and calm material transitions allow the kitchen to feel integrated rather than inserted. The visual rhythm of the 25×25 design framework subtly mirrors the rhythm of the exposed beams above, creating a quiet architectural dialogue between old and new.

This balance became one of the most important aspects of the project.

Light, Materials, and Everyday Living

Roof windows bring soft natural daylight deep into the apartment throughout the day. As the light changes, shadows move across the wooden floors, exposed beams, and oak surfaces of the Kongacph kitchen.

The kitchen itself was designed around everyday rituals rather than visual excess. Cooking, conversations, coffee rituals, and slow mornings naturally unfold around the central island. Its placement within the open-plan apartment allows it to function both as a workspace and as a gathering point.

For the two architects living here, the Kongacph kitchen became more than a functional object — it became part of the rhythm of daily life.

The Integral Kongacph Kitchen

This project reflects the broader philosophy behind every Kongacph kitchen: creating spaces that feel calm, architectural, and deeply connected to their surroundings.

Rather than following temporary trends, the design focuses on proportion, honest materials, and craftsmanship that can age naturally over time. The combination of reconstructed beams, restored wooden floors, and the bespoke 25×25 Kongacph kitchen island creates an atmosphere that feels both contemporary and timeless.

The result is a Copenhagen apartment where architecture, materiality, and everyday living exist in quiet harmony beneath the city rooftops.
